Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday that the honest taxpayer should not be harassed by revenue authorities and civil servants must adopt a sensitive and humane approach.
Mr Modi, who was interacting with 167 probationers of the Indian Revenue Service, exhorted them to keep a sense of trust for the people in course of their work.
“An overwhelming majority of people in the country are law-abiding, and wish to comply with laws in the interest of the nation. The honest taxpayer should not be harassed, even as the officers perform their duty of implementing the government’s revenue policy,” the PM said, as per a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office.
Officers should ensure that all of the government’s people-friendly initiatives reach the people on priority, Mr. Modi said. It was critical that they considered “each and every citizen of this country is a part of their family.”
“If this spirit prevails, the officers will be able to work with vigour and enthusiasm, and even the question of exhaustion will not arise,” the said.
